What can an AI agent on WhatsApp do for a business in Tunisia?
Retail, clinics, real estate, training centres, e-commerce: what a WhatsApp AI agent can handle, the Meta rules it must follow and the figures worth tracking.

In short
A WhatsApp AI agent answers your customers' messages using your own information: catalogue, public prices, opening hours, availability and procedures. It understands French, Arabic and Tunisian derja, including derja typed in Latin characters, and replies in the customer's language. In Tunisia it pays off for shops, clinics and medical practices, real estate agencies, training centres and online stores, wherever the same questions arrive every day. It runs on the official WhatsApp Business Platform: free-form replies for 24 hours after the customer's last message, Meta-approved templates beyond that. It hands over to a person as soon as a request leaves its scope: negotiation, complaints, medical questions, an unhappy customer. Judge it on four figures: time to first reply, share of requests solved without a human, handover rate, and appointments or orders generated.

7 sectionsWhat is a WhatsApp AI agent, and how is it different from a menu bot?
A menu bot offers buttons: "press 1 for opening hours". A customer who types a full sentence falls outside the script and gets nothing useful. An AI agent reads the message as written, understands the intent and answers from the information you have given it.
It can also act: check a time slot, log an appointment request, create a record in your CRM or send a brochure. That supervised ability to act is what separates it from a static FAQ. We describe this kind of tool on our AI agents and business assistants page.
Which use cases fit a Tunisian business?
A good use case has one tell: the same questions arrive every day, often in the evening or at weekends, when nobody is free to answer.
| Sector | What the agent handles | What goes to a person |
|---|---|---|
| Retail and showrooms | Stock, public prices, hours, address, delivery | Discounts, special quotes, complaints |
| Clinics and practices | Hours, specialties, booking, documents to bring | Any medical question, emergencies |
| Real estate | Listings by area and budget, booking a visit | Price negotiation, financing |
| Training centres | Syllabus, session dates, prerequisites, enrolment | Employer funding, special cases |
| E-commerce | Order tracking, sizes, returns, payment options | Disputes, refunds outside policy |
The boundary is the same on every line: the agent informs and prepares, a person commits the business. For a clinic that boundary is absolute: no medical advice, however the question is phrased.

Can it reply in French, Arabic and derja?
Yes, and this is where perceived quality is won or lost. On WhatsApp, Tunisian customers rarely write in Modern Standard Arabic. They type "3aslema, 9adech soum?" ("hi, how much is it?") or mix French and derja in one sentence.
A well-tuned agent detects the language and answers in the same register without becoming overly casual. That tuning must be tested on real customer messages, not on sentences written for a demo.
Which WhatsApp Business rules apply?
A professional agent runs on Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform (the official API), not on the phone app. Four rules shape how it works (source: Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform developer documentation).
- The 24-hour customer service window. When a customer messages you, you can reply freely for 24 hours after their last message.
- Approved templates beyond it. Outside that window, a business can only send message templates approved by Meta, grouped into categories (marketing, utility, authentication).
- Opt-in. Customers must have agreed to hear from you before you start a conversation.
- An identified business account. The number belongs to your Meta business account, and its reputation depends on how recipients react to your messages.
These rules change regularly, template pricing in particular, so always check the official documentation at launch. A serious provider tells you what Meta will bill, separately from their own fees.
How does the handover to a human work?
Handover is not optional; it is what makes an agent trustworthy. It triggers in four cases: the customer asks for it, the topic is out of scope, the tone turns sour, or the agent is not confident in its answer.
The person taking over receives a summary so the customer does not have to repeat themselves. Outside business hours, the agent states the real response time instead of promising an instant reply. We cover these principles in what actually works in customer service.
What should you measure?
Without measurement an agent drifts quietly. Track these every month:
- Time to first reply, day and night.
- Share of requests solved without a human, read alongside the next one.
- Handover rate and its reasons.
- Appointments, enrolments or orders that started on WhatsApp.
- Errors found in review: wrong answers, wrong tone, missed handovers.
- Opt-outs and blocks, a sign of over-messaging.
How do you start without risk?
Start with a single use case, such as pre-sale questions or booking. Gather the information the agent is allowed to use, test it internally on real conversations, then open it to part of your customers.
After launch, the agent needs monthly monitoring and improvement. That is the idea behind our AI agents as a service, explained in what an AI agent as a service is. To connect WhatsApp to your sales follow-up, see sales automation and ten tasks an SME can automate.
